Barack Obama had nearly 10 million fewer votes last night than in 2008. But it was enough to win. Fewer Republicans turned out to vote for Governor Romney as he won only 57 million votes.
Comparing to prior years...
- In 2008 John McCain had nearly 60 million votes.
- In 2004 Bush had 62 million votes.
What surprised me was the paucity of support for Romney. As I read the tea leaves, all the enthusiasm — not to mention all of the sane policies — belonged to the Republicans. And people across the country seemed to get that. The cheering crowds, the battalions of get-out-the-vote workers, the clarity of purpose expressed by both Romney and Ryan.More numbers...
Well, I was wrong and my friend Ron Radosh (among many others) was right: Romney never quite closed the deal and Obama’s efforts to paint him as an out-of-touch plutocrat eager to conduct a “war on women” succeeded.
Exit question: Was the lower GOP turnout due to Ron Paul supporters staying home?In 2000, in VA, Bush won young voters by 11. In '04, he lost them by 8. In 2008, Obama won them by 21. Yesterday, he won them by 25.
