Alexandria Advisory Group Seeks New Names for Jefferson David Highway

Alexandria City Manager Mark B. Jinks has announced the appointment of an Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Renaming Jefferson Davis Highway, which will solicit public feedback and consider potential new names for a portion of U.S. Route 1. In September 2016, the Alexandria City Council voted unanimously to begin the process of renaming Jefferson Davis Highway in Alexandria.

The Advisory Group plans to hold its first meeting in June, followed by a public survey over the summer to seek naming suggestions. Additional details will be posted online in the coming months as they are developed by the group.

The members of the Advisory Group are Laurie MacNamara (chair), a member of the City’s Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee; Lynnwood Campbell, board chair of Senior Services of Alexandria; Gerry Laporte, former president of the Arlington Historical Society; and Elmer Lowe, Sr., former president of the Arlington branch of the NAACP. While the Arlington County Board has not formally considered a name change, Arlington representatives were selected to provide input on potential new names for the continuous stretch of road in both localities.

What would you re-name it?

Alexandria, Virginia Should Abandon the 72 Hour Parking Rule

Alexandria, Virginia Vice Mayor Justin Wilson has been a proponent of removing old laws off of the City's books. The 72 hour parking rule is one that should have gone too.

At the most recent public hearing, City Council voted to keep two laws on the books as it pertains to long term parking in Alexandria. Currently, there's the 72 hour parking code which the City amended with this ruling and then there's the abandoned vehicle code.

The abandoned vehicle law could have easily been amended to include the 72 hour parking and travel permits language passed on May 13. The Alexandria Police Department has admitted that the overwhelming numbers of 72 hour parking cases it gets come from neighbors and the overwhelming majority of cases are resolved by the time the Police arrive.

Therefore, its time for City Council to abandon the 72 hour parking rule and stop pitting neighbor versus neighbor.
